The approach

I don't sell consultations.
I manage the return on your maintenance investment.

Sports turf maintenance is one of the largest operating costs of any golf course or sports complex — yet it is often run on inertia: tradition, habit and reaction to problems. My role is to turn maintenance from an expense into a managed investment with measurable effect.

Where budgets leak — the four mistakes I find at almost every venue

None of this is how I work — it is what an audit uncovers. These habits quietly drain more maintenance budget than any single line item:

Mistimed operations

The costly habit"We always do it at this time" — regardless of what the surface actually needs.

Spending without evidence

The costly habitInvesting in a product or technology with no baseline to compare against.

Reacting, not planning

The costly habitActing after a problem appears instead of preventing it strategically.

Budgets without priorities

The costly habitSpend justified by tradition rather than by return.

What I do instead — maintenance run as a managed investment

The first instrument is still the hand — every surface judged up close.
01

Measurability and control

Decisions based on data and analysis, not subjective judgement. Baselines first, so every intervention can prove its effect.

02

Timing optimisation

The same operation can have double the effect at the right moment — and almost none at the wrong one.

03

Prioritisation by return

Focus on the interventions that reduce future costs and risks, not the ones that merely look busy.

  • Stable, predictable playability
  • Lower long-term maintenance cost
  • Protection of the infrastructure investment
  • Improved player safety, reduced injury risk
  • Higher asset value of the facility
3–6 months

Diagnostics and rapid optimisation — find the leaks, fix the timing, set the baselines.

6–12 months

Structural improvement — programmes, budgets and team practices rebuilt around measurable return.

12–36 months

Long-term transformation — a surface, a team and a budget that perform predictably, season after season.

An international expert network

No one knows everything — and I don't claim to. On complex or specialised cases I work in partnership with established specialists across Europe and the USA: leading university and research groups, internationally recognised sports-surface experts, and best practice exchanged with top golf courses and sports venues. An extra layer of assurance behind every strategic decision.

Instead of more activity — more effect. Instead of experiments — measurable results. Instead of cost — return.

About

Yavor Atanasov

I have spent more than twenty years with my hands in turf — starting as a seasonal greenkeeper on a mountain course in Vail, Colorado, and finishing thirteen years as superintendent of Bulgaria's Peter Harradine championship course at Pravets, before founding Turf Vision to advise clubs, venues and estates independently.

Alongside the day job I have spent over a decade as Chairman of the Bulgarian Golf Greenkeepers Association and serve on the board of FEGGA, the European federation — which keeps me connected to the people and science shaping this profession, from Harrogate to the US Golf Industry Show, every single year.

What I bring to your venue is not theory. It is two decades of managing turf under pressure — budgets, staff, tournaments, weather — and an honest, independent opinion, even when it is not the one you were hoping to hear.

  • HNC Golf Course Maintenance — Elmwood College, St Andrews, Scotland
  • Turf Management — University of Guelph, Canada
  • Chairman, Bulgarian Golf Greenkeepers Association (10+ years)
  • Board Member, FEGGA — Federation of European Golf Greenkeepers Associations
